About Us
Here at Laurel Farm Alpacas we breed alpacas especially for their fine soft fleece which we sell either as raw fleece to hand spinners or as yarn for knitters and of course made up into our wonderful, unique hand knitted aran pattern sweaters, jackets, hats, and other garments.
Because the alpaca has many natural colours we do not dye our yarn and so you can see the same colour still on the animals in our paddocks.
We also sell alpaca felt which is incredibly soft and ideal for all sorts of craft work such as bags, jackets, wall hangings, hats, and your own creative uses.
Whilst on an alpaca buying trip to Chile we bought some hand woven scarves from the wife of one of the Aymara Indian farmers who have herds of alpacas all across the alti-plano, high in the Andes. We were so impressed by the craftsmanship of her work and the softness of the finished products that we asked her to make stock for our business.
Her alpacas are hand shorn, the yarn is hand spun and the pashminas hand woven. Each one is individually finished with an delightful border and fringe and because they are hand made each one is completely unique.
The natural colours of the alpaca are Black, White, Brown, Grey, Fawn and many shades in between. Because of the structure of the fibre alpaca fleece can often be worn by people who are allergic to sheep wool. Forget the prickle factor and that itchy feeling and luxuriate in the warm, light, feel good factor of alpaca.
In addition we have Alpaca Country Socks in many colours made in the UK from UK Alpaca which are knee length and ideal for all country pursuits as well as every day socks to wear with more formal wear. These are dyed in a variety of colours and are mixed with some nylon for harder wearing.
